Histoty of Basketball

Most people think that basketball is a relatively new sport in Bangladesh that was introduced to us as another "American sport". The truth is actually completely opposite. Basketball is not a new import to this Country, but has actually been played here since the early 1983.

Basketball in Bangladesh Today

• Basketball Bangladesh is the National Governing Body for Basketball in Bangladesh
• The Association has responsibility for the promotion, development and administration of all basketball activities in Bangladesh
• The primary focus of Basketball Bangladesh is to increase the participation levels of basketball through out Bangladesh and to provide professionally managed courses, competitions, leagues and services to the basketball public
• Basketball Bangladesh has a professional staff of ten. The Board of Basketball Bangladesh, comprised of voluntary members, governs overall policy.
• Basketball is the third largest sport in Bangladesh in participation terms with currently over 190,000 people actively playing basketball in Bangladesh.
• Almost 200 clubs cater for basketball players around the country, with approximately 1,100 teams participating in local competitions at a variety of levels

• Basketball is the third most popular physical activity after soccer and cricket among the 13-18 age group
• 45,000 young people playing on 2,000 teams across 520 schools
• 80,000 primary school kids playing in 2,000 schools – 52% boys: 48% girls
• 400 registered coaches
• The showcase league is the SuperLeague
